I turned off my laptop when it was updating
Selector .selector_input_interaction .selector_input. Selector .selector_input_interaction .selector_spinner.
If not press "control alt delete" and open up task manager and see if the update is showing as "Not Responding".
This is my work laptop and I am worried that I might lose some data if I reboot it. There are some occasional updates which do take ages, and don't necessarily do much disk IO.
Then do your updates and when you are done, change it back. My experience with this problem is that the Microsoft article linked above was utterly useless.
